About

The Melbourne Jazz Dance Association is a non-profit organisation devoted to the preservation and promotion of vernacular jazz dance and music in Melbourne, Australia. Its goal is to produce affordable dance events for Melbourne and visiting dancers, promoting the history of the dance as well as the current dance community.

That means that they like to hold really good swing dance parties and invite all their friends.

Founded in 2005, the MJDA began with its first event, the fifth annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange - MLX5: the Shoestring Exchange. The MLX5 theme reflected not only the MJDA's budget for the event, but also their commitment to providing affordable, quality social swing dancing events in Melbourne.

In 2006 the MJDA followed the success of the Shoestring Exchange with MLX6: the Fat Lotta Good Exchange, the largest all-social swing dance event in Australia.

2007 saw MLX7: the Kick Ass Exchange, the third Melbourne Lindy Exchange with a program featuring the some of the best bands and DJs in the country.

And from 28th-30th November 2008 the MJDA are hosting the eighth annual Melbourne Lindy Exchange - MLX8: the Exchange of the Living Dead!

The MJDA was founded by Sam Carroll, Di King, Brian Renehan, Wendy Rehehan and Darren Witt but welcomes new members, encouraging them to make contact for more information.

Current Members:

Sam Carroll (president)

Keith Hsuan (vice president)

Di King (treasurer)

Jaymee Lee

Brian Renehan

Wendy Renehan

Sally Winter (secretary)

Darren Witt

What are 'vernacular jazz dances'?
These dances developed in the the United States during the first half of the 20th century and include lindy hop, charleston, balboa, 'blues' dancing, shag and blackbottom.
